Thursday 2nd April 2026 · 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM BST — Memories, Poems, Art & the Book of Esther
Born in 1937, Mama Esther Olaoré Ayoka Ogunmodede has lived with extraordinary purpose and grace across nearly nine decades here on earth. From the classrooms of Jos and Ibadan to the courts of law, from the BBC studio to her beloved farm of animals and crops, she has left no ground untouched by her remarkable spirit.
She is a woman of the Word — and fittingly, one of her favourite books of the Bible is the Book of Esther. Like her namesake, she understood what it meant to step forward with courage "for such a time as this." As Christians, we believe she is not gone but gloriously alive in a new realm with Yahweh Y'isho — Jesus — a realm we shall each enter at our own appointed time. We honour her by continuing to study the book she loved. If you knew her, we invite you to share your memories so we can add more of her awesomeness to this wonderful site.
By Yoruba tradition, we celebrate her life for at least a full month. Each gathering is an opportunity to give thanks for a life extraordinarily well lived.
